GGCC Club Run, Sunday 11th January 2026 - South to Kilmarnock- 50 miles
Following last week's late cancellation of this ride, we plan to have another go!!! The forecast for Sunday is still looking dicey at present, hence the reason for a nice safe main road route on well gritted roads. Headwind out, Tailwind home.
However, Please check in on this post on Sunday morning before you jump into your bibtights, incase the weather has taken a turn for the worse. If this is the case, we may have to cancel again on the grounds of safety. Fingers crossed we can get out!!!
Please meet under the McLennan Arch on the green for 8:30am sharp start.
We plan to head south out of the Green, taking the standard route out of Glasgow to Malletsheugh and down the A77 before turning for Galston.
From there we head to Kilmarnock where we have the choice of 2 McDonalds……..we will then head back up to Fenwick and pick up the A77 again and back to retrace our ride out.
We will go through some basic safety, first aid and basic bike maintenance before we set off so that everyone stays safe and knows exactly what’s happening on the ride.
The group leaders will be identified prior to setting off in order that each paced group runs as smoothly as possible.
For those of you who are first aid trained and have been issued first aid pack, can you please bring these along on Sunday (and each run you attend)
Social paced groups out to the “Malletsheugh” where we will split into paced groups.
RIDE ETIQUETTE– We will ride out of town in groups as normal and split into paced groups at the Malletsheugh. From there, each group MUST stay together and work as a group. At the Malletsheugh we will start and ride at the advertised speeds of each paced group. If there is any split in the group (on Climbs etc) it is the responsibility of EVERYONE, not just the group leader, to get things back together at the top.
Ride Captains and Group leaders will decide on pace of group and arrange ride format.
Route
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AT THE ROUTE PRIOR TO SUNDAYS RIDE.
Forecast is to be wet but hopefully not icy! Temperatures 3-5 degrees and SSE winds of 20 mph gusting to 48mph.
WRAP UP…ITS GOING TO BE COLD BUT DRY.
Groups should contain no more than 10 riders.
All groups stay together and work together!!......this is a training ride not a race!!
Steady is steady and usually sit between 14 – 16 mph average.
Challenge should push your ability and sits about 16 - 18 mph average.
Cheeky Challenge is slightly faster and is around 18 - 20 mph.
**Each group stays together and works as a group and does not drop anyone so nobody is left exposed and riding solo
**these are the averages you should expect over the course of the ride in the above groups and there will be sections ridden faster and some slower depending on road profile and conditions
**Please remember to communicate within your group. If you get split due to junctions, traffic, roundabouts then get back together. If you get split as someone is dropping off the pace then that rider steps down a group, (or steps up if going through to hard) **If you need to ask the group to slow up, we would suggest you step down as you may be in the wrong group
Please remember tubes, pump, levers, multitool and also please ensure your bike is in good working order, oiled, lubed, maintained and clean
