GGCC STATEMENT AND UPDATE - PLEASE READ ref Coronavirus (COVID-19)

16 Mar 2020

GGCC Members

As you are all aware, we are currently in a time of uncertainty with the ongoing infection rates that Coronavirus is causing, and this has and will continue to impact daily lives.

I have been speaking with, and getting advice and guidance from both CTT and Scottish Cycling who themselves have been working to the guidelines set out by the relevant governing bodies and UK Government.

The statement tonight by the British PM that all unnecessary social contact must be avoided or at least kept to a minimum means that we must as a club do what is necessary.

My primary focus and responsibility as Club Captain is the safety of you all as GGCC members but I also must ensure that we comply with whatever guidelines are set out and expected of us.

The following is with immediate effect but please remember that this is a short-term course of action for a long-term gain.

I will do all I can to ensure that whatever is moved, deferred or cancelled finds a place in the diary at an alternative time but I can’t promise that it all will, but I will do my best.

CTT Open 25-mile Time Trial incorporating The Scottish District Championships – CTT have requested that all events be cancelled until further notice so this will now NOT go ahead on May 17th. An alternative date may be secured but this very much depends on the diary later in the year.

GGCC Club Championship confined Hill Climb – March 29th. This event is now deferred to a later date in the year. I will do all I can to fit this event into the diary so our championship still offers a full programme of events although it will be ‘out of sync’. This is a decision I have not taken lightly but feel is the correct course of action at this time.

GGCC Club Rides – I feel it is the right decision to suspend all GGCC ride activity for a period of 4 weeks. This decision has been made due to todays request by the powers that be that all unnecessary social gatherings be limited. I appreciate that this may be perceived as ‘extreme’ but again GGCC does what’s right and we don’t want to ‘be that club’ that disregards the directives put in place. I hope you understand, and we will review again week commencing 13th April.

The above are all short-term solutions for a long-term fix and I hope that you all understand, you may not agree but I feel it’s the correct and expected course of action. Unfortunately, it’s just the way it is at present.

We love to ride bikes and it’s a pleasure and our hobby but it falls into the bracket of  ‘unnecessary social interaction’ by society, which means in the grand scheme of things ‘we don’t need to do it’ and we as a club are following the actions that are being implemented by many other clubs.

For the short term, turbo’s, swift of which we have a class leading GGCC group and your own rides are the order of the day.

Let’s work together on this and as ever GGCC’ers I will keep you all absolutely up to date and do all I can to limit the impact it has on you as members, but lets stay safe and hope that our measures in some way help to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Thankyou
